The suburban city of Burien stretches across nearly 7.5 square miles of land south of Seattle in Washington’s King County. Bordering Puget Sound to the west and SeaTac to the east, Burien is home to about 50,000 people.
Burien was incorporated in 1993 with voter approval. Burien’s population was later boosted with the annexation in 2009 of the southern portion of North Highline. This area had been considered one of the largest urban unincorporated areas of King County. Upon becoming part of Burien, the annex gave the city an additional 14,000 residents. Around this same time, several renovations were completed in Burien’s downtown area. New construction yielded 70,000 square feet of retail space and more than 400 condominiums.
